2025 SGASA Annual Symposium

Growing Together in Stellenbosch

From 3–5 June 2025, the Seedling Growers Association of South Africa (SGASA) brought nursery professionals together in the heart of the Western Cape at its annual symposium in Stellenbosch. Set against South Africa’s picturesque vineyards and paired with expert programming, this year’s event combined practical nursery tours, cutting-edge presentations, and ample networking — with a fine wine experience at Muratie Wine Estate rounding out the welcoming atmosphere.

The pre-tour kicked off with visits to Rosenhof Wholesale Plant Nursery, Vitroplant SA, and Cape Sweet Fruit Nursery, providing delegates with rich insights into operational best practices. On Day 1, attendees toured the Stellenbosch Horti Demo Centre (including the Riddle climate control system) and the Experimental Station, later enjoying wine tasting at Muratie Wine Estate. On the second day we explored Shadowlands Nursery, Samgro Wholesale Nursery, and Hexberg Vine Nursery, including live presentations and nursery tours that showcased next level propagation and management approaches.

The conference day featured a packed schedule of expert talks and industry updates. Highlights included John LeaCox delivering insights on managing nursery pH, EC, and alkalinity in water and substrates; Cilliers Van Rooyen on integrated crop protection; Deon Van Rooyen speaking on humidity management during propagation; and Prof David Drew introducing open-air concepts for plant research in South Africa. Further sessions covered certification updates, bio-stimulant applications, nutrition management, and the role of AI in business automation, capped by research feedback from Sascha Beck Pay and closing remarks from keynote speaker Peter van Kets.  The day concluded with the SGASA Annual general meeting (AGM), a gala dinner and awards ceremony hosted by Sakata, celebrating achievement and excellence within the industry.

This year’s symposium not only offered participants a combination of hands-on nursery tours and expert-led sessions addressing key issues like sustainability, automation, and plant science—but also facilitated meaningful connections through informal gatherings and local hospitality. As bookings closed and anticipation peaked, the 2025 SGASA Symposium reaffirmed its position as the premier platform for growth, innovation, and collaboration within South Africa’s seedling-growing sector.
